Natasha Wanigatunga-In the Moment Interview

Trust the process. Embrace whatever comes your way, we are all on a different journey! Failure is what teaches you.

After contributing an article to our Confession’s of a Dreamer section we wanted to interview Natasha Wanigatunga about her life, faith, and budding career as an actress in Hollywood, CA.  Winner of Miss Sri Lanka USA 2015 and working fashion model (for brands like: Pop Sugar, Nº21, Nordstrom, and Aeropostale) it’s not hard to see why Natasha’s future is extremely bright.

Where are you from originally?

I am born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska.

I know you’ve heard this before but you have a very distinct look; what is your heritage?

I am 100% Sri Lankan

How did you get into modeling & acting?

I started modeling when I was 12, and I had my first photoshoot in Sri Lanka with my mom. I fell in love with acting when I was much younger as well, throughout elementary school I loved nothing more than performing in the school plays because it was so in the moment.

I think it is important for every woman or man to have her or his voice heard. Our opinions matter and make a difference in our workspace. In the entertainment industry one simple idea can go a long ways.

What is your philosophy of living in the moment?

Being present to your body and what is around you. All the answers you need are within you. Taking the time to breathe is what keeps me in the moment.

On a shoot what are some songs that get you into character?

I still love “Chunky” by Bruno Mars. Can’t go wrong with some hip hop! Anything with a beat; I love to dance.

You seem like one who likes to speak their mind. Why is it so important to have your voice heard in your line of work?

I think it is important for every woman or man to have her or his voice heard. Our opinions matter and make a difference in our workspace. In the entertainment industry one simple idea can go a long ways.

What does faith mean to you?

Faith is so important because it keeps me true to my heart and my desires. I’ve learned that when you are faithful to your heart, you stay true to who you are, and that’s priceless.

What do you tell youth who want to get into the modeling/ acting industry, but have no clue of what steps to take?

Don’t let any other person or standard define you. You are beautifully created in your own unique way and the right people will work with you. Trust the process. Embrace whatever comes your way, we are all on a different journey! Failure is what teaches you.

Tell us a little bit about your family?

I have a brother, mom, dad, and grandma who I love dearly. I am blessed to be close with all of my family.

Hollywood can be intimidating to most, how have you managed to keep your focus and faith?

Being comfortable in my own skin. It’s important to be confident in who you are, to love yourself, and to know your worth.

Don’t let any other person or standard define you. You are beautifully created in your own unique way and the right people will work with you. Trust the process.

What was it like working on set with the master filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola? And what did you take from that experience?

Natasha on set with Francis Ford Coppola

My brother Stefan, offered me the job to work sound on set with him. I learned a lot from that experience, especially coming from an actors perspective. As an artist,  it would be integrity doesn’t go out of style. Francis Ford Coppola represents integrity within himself, the process, and his brilliant work.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Green Goddess Ice Cream from my favorite market in LA Erewhon. And good quality dark chocolate, I’m going to go get some right now!

What would you consider a dream role?

The best roles I have had were the most unexpected. Ultimately, Princess Jasmine!

Why is positivity so important in your life?

My loved ones say I was born naturally a positive person. I’m usually smiling and don’t realize it. Perspective is so important in my everyday life. It releases gratitude and shows the little things in life are truly the big things.

At the end of the day what do you want to be remembered for?

For how much I have loved.
